“Education Blogger” Jon Pelto Flunks Credibility Test

Two days ago, Jon Pelto posted an article bashing Superintendent Paul Vallas, using the recently released CMT scores as evidence of the superintendent’s ineffectiveness. What I find interesting is that Pelto only offers 4th and 6th grade test results as evidence. I wonder why?

Perhaps it’s because the CMT scores for the 7th and 8th grades went up in both reading and writing.

7th Grade Reading and Writing Scores
Year Total Reading % Goal Range Total Reading % Proficient Total Writing % Goal Range Total Writing % Proficient
2012 49.3 62.6 31.3 58.3
2013 50.9 65.1 36.2 62.1

8th Grade Reading and Writing Scores
Year Total Reading % Goal Range Total Reading % Proficient Total Writing % Goal Range Total Writing % Proficient
2012 44.5 59.2 32.3 63.1
2013 45.3 59.8 32.7 62.7

What about the high school scores which show an increase in math on the CAPT? Or the third grade class, which had higher writing scores this year?

Instead of looking at all the scores, Pelto picked out the ones which bolstered his argument. Hooray confirmation bias!

What do you think?
