BOE Chair takes it Upon Herself to Void Vote on Community Forum Flyer

On Thursday, Education Bridgeport! reported that red-tape nearly blocked the Community Engagement Committee from releasing a flyer for an upcoming community forum.

As it turns out, saner minds did not prevail. According to multiple sources, despite the committee’s approval, the flyer for the October 22 community forum at Cesar Batalla School was never sent to parents.

According to my sources, Chairwoman Sauda Baraka refused to give the superintendent’s office the go ahead to release the flyer, claiming the vote was invalid.

In other words, Baraka used her clout and position to invalidate a unanimous committee vote. Talk about abuse of power.

Baraka’s actions mean parents will only have a week’s notice before next week’s forum. It’s also possible the board will push the forum back to a later date, which is perhaps Baraka’s aim.

The board is expected to take up this issue at Tuesday’s night’s regular board meeting.
